Biogen is ramping up its support of South African triathlon by bringing one of the country’s top ultra-distance triathletes, James Cunnama on board. Cunnama’s fierce work ethic and commitment to the most grueling sport imaginable has carved out a successful career strewn with race victories and podiums from across the globe.
As the official nutrition partner of the Standard Bank Ironman African Championship, being held in Nelson Mandela Bay this Sunday, 7 April, Biogen have bolstered their involvement with an opportunity to draw on Cunnama’s high-performance experienced and expertise.
“We share important values,” says Biogen General Manager, Brandon Fairweather. “James is the embodiment of our #beyourbest campaign. He has a world-class attitude that has seen him consistently put himself out there to be measured against the best. At Biogen we do the same. The choice to bring James into the Biogen family was an obvious one.”
“I can’t wait to represent this proudly South African brand,” says Cunnama of Biogen.
With top-five results at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii and a coveted Challenge Roth victory, Cunnama is South Africa’s most successful ultra-distance triathlon export… and he’s not slowing down. The birth of his son Jack, late in 2017 and the recent announcement that he and his World Champion triathlete wife, Jodie, are expecting twins in September, have stoked the passion even further.
Cunnama has a global following from years of flying the South African flag proudly in international competition, yet the title of Ironman African Champion on offer this weekend in Port Elizabeth has eluded him. The Championship race is especially dear to Cunnama, who is expecting an aggressive race from the stacked field, and a fight to the line.
Cunnama made the decision to race professionally after volunteering at the first two Ironman events hosted in PE, while completing his degree at the former University of Port Elizabeth. “It’s not getting easier,” Cunnama admits. “This event attracts a quality men’s field. But I feel I carry a hometown advantage and I’m looking forward to laying it all out there for the fans!”
